Short Horror Stories: The Body – Convulsing

In the dimly lit basement of an old Victorian house, there was a room that no one dared to enter. The air was thick with the scent of decay, and the walls were lined with shelves of dusty, ancient books. In the center of the room stood a wooden table, and on it lay a body. The body was covered in a white sheet, but beneath it, something was moving.

It was a cold winter night when Sarah, a curious young woman, decided to explore the house she had just inherited from her estranged grandfather. She had heard whispers about the basement, but no one would tell her what was down there. Armed with a flashlight and a sense of adventure, she descended the creaky wooden stairs.

As she opened the door to the forbidden room, a chill ran down her spine. The flashlight flickered, casting eerie shadows across the walls. She approached the table cautiously, her heart pounding in her chest. The movement beneath the sheet grew more violent, and she could hear a low, guttural moan echoing through the room.

Sarah hesitated for a moment, but her curiosity got the best of her. She slowly lifted the sheet, revealing the face of a man. His eyes were wide open, but there was no life in them. His mouth was twisted into a grotesque grimace, and his body was convulsing uncontrollably. She took a step back, horrified, but then she noticed something even more terrifying. The man’s body was not the only thing moving. There were shadows beneath the skin, writhing and twisting as if something was alive inside him.

Before she could scream, the body lurched forward, and a hand grabbed her ankle. She tried to pull away, but it was too strong. The hand dragged her closer, and she could feel the cold, dead fingers digging into her flesh. She looked into the man’s eyes, and for a moment, she thought she saw something flicker there. It was a spark of malevolence, a sign that whatever was inside him was not human.

Just as she was about to lose consciousness, the door to the room burst open. Her brother, who had followed her into the house, stood in the doorway, his face pale with fear. He grabbed her and pulled her away from the table, but the hand clung to her ankle like a vice. With a final, desperate tug, he managed to free her, and they stumbled out of the room, slamming the door shut behind them.

As they ran up the stairs, they could hear the convulsing body thrashing against the table, the moans growing louder and more frantic. They didn’t stop until they were outside, the cold winter air a welcome relief against their feverish skin.

Years later, Sarah still couldn’t shake the memory of that night. She had seen something that no one should ever see, something that haunted her dreams. And she knew that whatever was in that basement was still there, waiting for its next victim.
